Chapter 12
When I offered up my suggestion, Maggie had to do a double-take to make sure I was not pulling her chain.
"Hold on," she asked, "are you seriously asking me if I would like you to come up to spend a weekend with me and Biscuit?"
"I wasn't sure if you had any other plans," I explained, "and, I wanted to see what weekend would work best for you."
"Are Gary, Jessica, and Benny tagging along?" she inquired.
"Nope," I stated, "just me."
"How would you get up here?" she quizzed.
I explained how the regional transit authority ran buses between Peterborough and a connecting commuter train in Oshawa. I would take the train from the stop closest to me to meet the bus, and then ride into cottage country where she would meet me at the bus terminal, and then shuttle me from there back to her place. While she appreciated the idea, she was a little hesitant with the notion.
"Does it have to be downtown Peterborough?" she probed. "I don't mind heading into the city, but isn't there a stop closer to me? That way we can avoid passing the racetrack slots altogether."
"Hold on a second," I requested, as I opened a new tab on my Internet browser. "I'm going to see if there is a stop closer to Rice Lake, so we can bypass that place."
A few keystrokes later, I found myself on the regional transit's website, and had my answer.
"Ah, here we go," I announced. "There's a stop on the southern outskirts of Peterborough."
Maggie was still unsure about that locale. "Anywhere else?"
"There's a carpool lot off of 115, near Millbrook," I explained. "We could meet up there as an alternative."
"That seems to be the most feasible spot for us to meet-up," she concluded.
"Okay then," I replied, clicking a couple more links on the website. "And, it looks like it will be a little cheaper to get off there than to head all the way into Peterborough."
"That will be easier on your pocketbook," Maggie stated. "While I like for you to come see me, there's no need to break the bank in order to do so."
"Fair enough," I commented. "Now, to figure out a weekend that is convenient for both of us."
"Logic would dictate sometime after your first paycheck," she noted.
"So, that won't be until after the last day of the month," I said.
"You only get paid on a monthly basis?" Maggie queried.
"Twice a month," I corrected. "The last business day before the 15th, and then the end of the month. I hope that's alright with you."
"Honey," she stated, "you are definitely worth the wait."
I smiled. "You make me blush."
"Hey," she teased, "that's my line."
The two of us shared a laugh, and concluded I would make the trip the first weekend of the following month. Perfect, this will give me time to work on my poetry project, and present it to her as a gift. The two of us continued to chat over the computer for a while, so much so, I didn't hear Jim come home from work.
